Review: Breakfast with Clive Betts MP

SP Broadway was delighted to welcome Clive Betts MP, Chair of the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Select Committee, as the guest speaker for our latest online Politics of Planning roundtable.

Attendees from Lovell Strategic Land, Savills, Barratt Homes, Montagu-Evans, British Land and Catesby Estates among others all contributed to the discussion. Topics covered included the challenges that will face a potential Labour government, housing for older people, and Green Belt reform.

Clive gave an in-depth overview of both the role of the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Select Committee, and what could potentially be expected from a future Labour government. He highlighted the need for any new government not to be too radical in its planning reform to curb uncertainty in the industry. Clive also led a robust discussion on what could speed up the planning process, including reform to statutory consultee feedback, the reinstatement of mandatory housing targets and regulations for councils as well as how to encourage councils to work across boundaries with neighbours.

Our thanks to Clive Betts MP and guests for attending and contributing to such an interesting discussion. Our next online event is with Cllr Bella Sankey, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, on Tuesday 23rd April.
