Review: Surrey breakfast with Cllr Matt Furniss
SP Broadway was delighted to welcome Cllr Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth, at Surrey County Council, as the guest speaker for our latest online Politics of Planning roundtable.
Attendees from Rydon Homes, Balmoral Land, and Lovell Strategic Land among others all contributed to the discussion. Topics covered included the development of bus services across the county, the need for more funding for infrastructure development and the current status of local plans and whether they were paused or in consultation.
Matt gave an in-depth overview of the challenges facing Surrey, including a county-wide housing assessment, figures on immigration into the county as well as the need for greater later living provision. Matt led a robust discussion on the creation of ‘Healthy Streets’ and Surrey’s design codes and how developers could work within those constraints. He also spoke on the improvements being planned and made for the M25 junctions as well as the need for strategic planning and the past status of Surrey County Council and its prior talks around becoming a Unitary Authority.
Our thanks to Matt and guests for attending and contributing to such an interesting discussion. Our next online event is with Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council, on Wednesday 24th January.
